Her Story
A Painter Who Sees the World in Layers
Kalina Li joined US Fine Art Education Center at age eight with a sketchbook full of doodles and a curiosity that her teachers recognized immediately. Seven years later, she is one of the center's most decorated students — a Gold Key winner whose work has been exhibited regionally and praised by university reviewers.
From her earliest classes in the Little Artists program, Kalina showed an unusual patience for observation. While other students painted quickly, she would study her subject — the angle of a petal, the way light pooled in a glass — before touching brush to paper. Her instructors nurtured that instinct, guiding her through increasingly demanding technical exercises in watercolor, then oil, then charcoal.
By eighth grade, Kalina had developed a signature approach: layered, luminous botanical compositions that combined scientific precision with emotional warmth. Her series of garden studies, completed over two semesters in the Advanced Artists program, became the centerpiece of her Scholastic Art & Writing Awards submission — earning her a Gold Key in the Painting category, one of the highest honors available to student artists in the United States.
Her portfolio also drew attention during Harvard's high school portfolio review program, where faculty noted her exceptional control of value and her ability to build complex color relationships across a unified body of work. Kalina credits the Portfolio Prep track at US Fine Art for teaching her how to think about a portfolio as a cohesive statement rather than a collection of individual pieces.
Outside the studio, Kalina volunteers as a junior teaching assistant at US Fine Art's Saturday morning classes for younger students. She plans to study Fine Arts or Illustration at university, with a long-term goal of combining scientific illustration with fine art practice.
